Taking my hammock on holiday- Where do I start?
Hammocks are a great addition to any outdoor adventure, and taking one on your next holiday is an excellent way to relax and unwind in another country. Whether you plan to use your hammock for camping, beach trips, or any other outdoor activity, there are a few things to consider before taking it on your next adventure.
Firstly, you'll need to choose the right type of hammock for your trip. There are many different types of hammocks available, including cotton, polyester, EllTex, and camping hammocks. Fabric hammocks are typically made of cotton or polyester and are great for lounging in the backyard or on a patio. Traveller hammocks, on the other hand, are made of materials like nylon, parachute silk, or polyester and are more durable and better suited for camping trips and holidays. These hammocks can be packed tightly and are lightweight meaning they won’t take up too much space in your suitcase or backpack and won’t make a huge difference towards your weight limits if you have any.
Some camping hammocks come with extra conveniences, such as mosquito nets (like the Moskito Traveller Hammock) to protect you from insects, and you can purchase a tarp to protect you from the elements while you sleep. Be sure to choose a hammock that is appropriate for your trip and provides the necessary features to make your experience comfortable.
Next, you'll need to choose the right hammock fixings for your hammock. For travelling, we usually recommend Micro-rope fixings or Adventure Ropes as these are the most lightweight and versatile fixings that are used to attach the hammock to trees or other anchor points. You can also use straps that are made of durable materials and are adjustable to ensure that you can get the perfect hang every time and these straps aren’t as damaging to the trees.
When it comes to packing your hammock, it's important to keep weight and size in mind. Camping hammocks are typically designed to be lightweight and packable, making them easy to transport. However, make sure that you choose a hammock that can comfortably accommodate your weight and that you have enough room to sleep or lounge in it comfortably. All our hammocks have a section that clearly labels the load capacity in kilograms, these can be converted to pounds or stones online to give you a better understanding.
Along with your hammock, you'll also need to pack a few other essentials to make your trip as comfortable as possible. Be sure to bring a sleeping bag or insulated pad to provide insulation and protection from the ground, we also recommend using an underquilt if you’re going into colder climates.
When you’re ready to set up your hammock, it's important to find the perfect spot that will provide both comfort and safety. Look for trees, posts, or walls that are sturdy and stable, and make sure that your hammock is set up at the right height to provide maximum comfort. Before getting into the hammock, make sure that your hammock is properly secured and that you've checked it for any signs of wear or damage before using it.
Taking your hammock on holiday can be a great way to relax and enjoy the great outdoors. Before you go, be sure to choose the right type of hammock, hammock fixings, and packable accessories to make your trip as comfortable as possible. With a little bit of planning and preparation, you can enjoy a wonderful holiday in your hammock, no matter where your adventures take you.
