Will water damage my hammock?

Water Damage Hammock

There are a variety of materials that hammocks are made of, and the composition of a hammock can be really important when it comes to withstanding rain and being generally weatherproof. Many of our customers consider this a big factor in whether they would purchase the hammock or not. We have a wide variety of hammocks with different compositions some being mostly cotton with added polyester or durability, some of our hammocks are made from EllTex and we have a variety of traveler hammocks which are made from breathable nylon, while our ultra-light range offers hammocks made from durable parachute silk, meaning they are the lightest of our hammocks and the most waterproof. We have a variety of hammocks made from Brazilian recycled cotton and the purchase of these hammocks supports a charity, click here to find out more.

Buying a cotton hammock is great for indoor use but can also be used outside if you can store it during the colder months, however, don’t let this put you off as cotton is an easily washable material and can be hand washed or machine washed on a gentle cycle with a little bit of mild detergent. We do recommend looking at our EllTex hammocks as these hammocks are better equipped for rainy days and won’t need as much maintenance as the cotton hammocks. A product we think is great for weatherproofing is the Nikwax solution. With Nik wax Cotton Proof you can waterproof any of our hammocks (cotton, silk, canvas, polycotton) with this wash-in waterproofing. You can use it in a washing machine or hand wash, which is useful as many of our hammocks are hand washed only. Below are some benefits of using Nikwax:

  • Easy to apply - wash-in, brush-on or spray-on
  • Treated items dry remarkably fast
  • Lasts several washes
  • Prolongs the life of your hammock
  • Leave your hammock outdoors for longer

Additionally, water damage can also impact your stands, whether metal or wooden, but we assure that the quality of our stands withstand the harsh conditions and may need to occasionally be treated for either surface rust or using wood treatment when you think is best, as our products are built to last! We do recommend purchasing a cover for the hammocks as this can increase the longevity and durability of the stands for many years to come, click here to browse.
